• Torrey Pines Gliderport

On Sunday afternoon, twenty-five members of the Best Places to Photograph in San Diego meetup group converged on the Torrey Pines Gliderport to enjoy the bright low-angle sun and the colorful display of San Diego's para-gliders. This was my first time at the Gliderport and my first time photographing para-gliders but the event was well organized by Meetup leader, Tanya Solario, and the more experienced members of the group situated the newbies in the best places to capture these engineless aircraft.

Paragliders are lightweight, free-flying, foot-launched glider aircraft with no rigid primary structure. Despite not using an engine, paraglider flights can last many hours and cover many hundreds of kilometres, often climbing to altitudes of a few thousand metres.

The Torrey Pines Gliderport is a city-owned private-use glider airport located on a cliff 300 ft above the Pacific Ocean in the La Jolla neighborhood of San Diego, California.

The Torrey Pines cliffs have featured soaring aircraft since the 1930s with many famous aviators. including Charles A. Lindbergh, earning their wings on the strong ocean breezes. The site has been the location of several national and international soaring records since 1946.
